Working with scans
Why can't I select the text in my PDF?Because the PDF is almost certainly a scan — a photograph of a page rather than text — so there is nothing to select until OCR reads the pixels and turns them into characters.How do I get the text out of a screenshot or a photo?Run the image through optical character recognition, which reads the shapes of the letters and gives you back real, selectable text.How do I edit the text in a scanned PDF?You cannot edit a scan directly, because the page is a picture. OCR PDF recognises the words and rebuilds them as real editable lines on top of the original page, so you can correct a name or a figure and save a normal PDF.How do I make a grey, speckled scan readable?Raise the contrast and convert to black and white. That removes the grey cast and the speckle in one step, because a scan's real problem is almost never brightness — it is that the paper and the ink are too close in tone.
Getting the most out of PDFs
