Photos for forms

What photo does the GST (গুচ্ছ) admission form need: white background, face size and the 100 KB limit?

Take a colour photo against a white background with your face filling about two-thirds of the height, then resize it to 300 × 300 pixels as a JPG no bigger than 100 KB. In Resize Image, type 300 in Width and 300 in Height and 100 in the File size box for the resizing; Background set to White can make a plain, light background white, but the face size and dress are up to the photo you take.

The GST (গুচ্ছ) admission form asks for the same 300 × 300 pixel size as many job forms, but it adds rules about the photo itself: the background, how big your face is and what you wear. The resizing takes a minute. Getting those other rules right has to happen when you take the photo.

The report we read does not tie these rules to one admission year, and they can change. Check the GST circular for your year before you start.

Take the photo right first

Most of these rules are about the photo, not the file. No resizer can fix them afterwards, so a few minutes here saves a rejected form.

  • White background. Stand in front of a plain white wall or a white sheet, a little away from it so your shadow does not fall on it.
  • Light from the front. Face a window in daylight. A light behind you turns your face dark.
  • Colour, not black and white. The report asks for a colour photo.
  • No uniform. The report says the photo should not be taken in a uniform.
  • Head and shoulders, looking straight at the camera. Hold the phone at eye level, or ask someone to take it.

Face size in numbers

Two-thirds of 300 pixels is 200. So in the finished photo, your face should take up roughly 200 of the 300 pixels from top to bottom.

Resize Image crops your photo to a square, but it does not zoom in on your face. If your face is small in the photo, crop it closer in your phone's gallery first, to a square around your head and shoulders, and then resize. Or take the photo again from closer.

After resizing, tap Actual size and look: does your face fill about two-thirds of the square from top to bottom? If it looks small, crop closer and run it again.

Step by step

  1. Open Resize Image and choose your photo, with Picture on Photo. It is resized on your own phone or computer and is not uploaded.
  2. Type 100 in the File size box, then 300 in Width and 300 in Height. JPG is already the format.
  3. If the wall behind you came out light grey or with an uneven shadow, set Background to White; for a light blue, grey or cream wall, choose White, fully. Only the plain background touching the edges changes, not you.
  4. Check the crop in the preview. If the top of your head is cut off, open More options and set Keep this part to Top. Leave Colour on colour.
  5. Read the checks by the preview: the size under 100 KB, 300 × 300 pixels as asked, saved as JPG, each with a tick. Check the face size at Actual size, then tap Resize picture, download the file and upload it.

The file is kept at 100,000 bytes or less, so it passes whether the form counts a kilobyte as 1,000 or 1,024 bytes.

What to check when the photo is refused

  • Wrong pixel size. It must be exactly 300 × 300, not just under 100 KB.
  • Over 100 KB. A file shown as 99 KB on one computer can be over 100 KB by another count. Keep it at 100,000 bytes or less.
  • Not a real JPG. A screenshot is usually PNG. Renaming it to .jpg does not change it. The tool always saves a real JPG.
  • Sideways. Phones store which way is up as a note in the photo, and some forms ignore it. The tool reads the note and saves the photo upright.
  • Grey or patterned background, a small face, a uniform, a black-and-white photo. These break the circular's photo rules even if the file uploads. A plain grey wall can be made white with Background; for the rest, retake the photo.

What the tool cannot do

  • It can make a plain, light background white, but it cannot replace a busy or patterned one. If no plain background is found, the picture is left as it is and the page says so. Stand in front of a plain wall.
  • It does not zoom in on your face or judge its size for you.
  • It has nothing to do with the selfie step; that happens inside the application.
  • It checks size, pixels, format and file name only, not whether the photo follows every rule in the circular.

If you are also applying for government jobs, the same photo size is covered in the Teletalk photo guide. For Dhaka University, which uses a different size, see the DU admission photo guide.

Common questions

What is the GST admission photo size?

As reported by Prothom Alo: 300 × 300 pixels, not more than 100 KB, a colour JPG, with a white background, your face about two-thirds of the photo's height and no uniform. Check the GST circular for your year, as rules can change.

I searched for গুচ্ছ ভর্তি ছবির সাইজ. Is this the right guide?

Yes. গুচ্ছ ভর্তি ছবির সাইজ is 300 × 300 pixels and no more than 100 KB, as a colour JPG on a white background. In Resize Image, type 300 in Width and 300 in Height and 100 in the File size box for the size; Background can whiten a plain, light wall, but the face size and dress depend on the photo you take.

Can Resize Image make my background white?

Only a plain one. Set Background to White for a light grey or shadowed wall, or White, fully for a light blue, grey or cream one; only the background touching the edges changes, not your face or clothes. It cannot replace a busy background, so take the photo in front of a plain white wall or sheet.

Can I use my Teletalk job photo for GST?

The pixels and KB are the same, 300 × 300 under 100 KB. Use it only if it also has a white background, shows your face at about two-thirds of the height, is in colour and shows you out of uniform.

Is the selfie the same as the photo?

No. The report says the application takes a selfie as well, as a separate step inside the form. The photo you upload still has to follow the photo rules.
