Frequently asked questions about Compress PDF to 1 MB

Why do so many forms cap uploads at 1 MB?

It is a round figure that keeps a form fast for everyone and still leaves room for a few scanned pages. Online applications, bank and insurance forms and many customer portals use it. A phone photo of a document is often 3 MB on its own, which is why the upload is refused.

How many pages fit under 1 MB?

A scan of up to about ten pages usually fits. A document made from real text fits at almost any length, because text takes very little room. A long document full of photos may not get under 1 MB in one piece; the result tells you the smallest it could make.

Is 1 MB the same as 1,000 KB or 1,024 KB?

Forms count it either way, so the tool aims for the smaller count. 1 MB here means 1,024 KB counted as 1,000 bytes each, which passes a form that counts in thousands and one that counts in 1,024s.

Will the text go blurry?

No. Text in a PDF is not stored as a picture, so it stays sharp at any zoom and prints at full quality. Only the photos and scans inside the file are made smaller, and at 1 MB they usually stay close to how they looked.

It is still over 1 MB. What now?

The pictures are already as small as the tool will make them, so the page count is the problem. Split the PDF into two or three parts and compress each, or remove pages you do not need with Organize PDF first.

Does anything change apart from the size?

No. Every page stays, in the same order and at the same page size. Only the pictures inside are lowered in resolution.

Is it free?

Yes. Every tool works without paying and without an account. Files can be up to 200 pages and 80 MB, and a run that fails costs you nothing.

Do I need to create an account?

No. All tools work without signing in. An account raises your hourly allowance and lets you see what you have processed.

What happens to my file?

Your file stays on our server only for a short time while it is processed, then it is deleted. It is sent over an encrypted connection. We keep a record that the tool was used, but not the file name or what is in the file.
