300 KB on our test files
The same real files as our other size tests, on the 300 KB setting. Measured on October 21, 2026.
| Test file | Before | After | Page DPI after | How it looks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Letter with one photo, 3 pages | 415 KB | 112 KB | 72 | Text sharp; photo fine on screen |
| Scanned letter, 1 page, grayscale | 1.5 MB | 268 KB | 150 | Close to the original |
| Scanned invoice, 1 page, color | 1.0 MB | 90 KB | 150 | Close to the original |
| Scanned letter, 3 pages, grayscale | 4.0 MB | 195 KB | 72 | Readable; small print soft |
| Photo brochure, 6 pages | 1.27 MB | 191 KB | 110 | Good on screen |
| Scanned report, 12 pages, color | 16.7 MB | 203 KB | 36 | Hard to read |
Above about five scanned pages, 300 KB forces the pages down to a sharpness that is hard to read. The tool will still make the file, but check it before you upload; splitting it is the better answer.
Getting a scan under 300 KB without making it unreadable
Most of a scan's weight is color it does not need. Before compressing:
- Scan in grayscale, not color, if the page is black text. The same three pages are often half the size.
- Scan at 200 or 300 DPI, not 600. Higher only adds weight.
- Crop the empty margins away, or delete blank pages with Organize PDF.

Frequently asked questions about Compress PDF to 300 KB
How many pages fit in 300 KB?
In our tests, one scanned page kept a sharp 150 DPI at 268 KB, three scanned pages fitted at 72 DPI, and a twelve-page color scan fitted only at 36 DPI, which is hard to read. For a long scan, ask whether the form takes several files.
Is 300 KB enough for a photo?
Yes. A six-page brochure of photos came to 191 KB at 110 DPI, which looks good on a screen.
Will the text stay sharp?
Real text is not a picture, so it stays sharp at any size. Only scans and photos lose detail as the file gets smaller.
The result is much smaller than 300 KB. Why?
The tool lowers picture sharpness in fixed steps and stops at the first one that fits, so a file can land well under the limit. A typed document often needs no change at all; then you get your original back.
Can I aim for 250 KB to be safe?
Yes. Type 250 in the size box. The file is kept under the number you type, counted in thousands of bytes, so it passes forms that count either way.
