How it works
Compress PDF to 10 MB in three steps
Add the large PDF
A thesis, a scanned book, or a brochure full of photos.
10 MB is already typed in
The size box reads 10000 KB, so the file stays under 10,000,000 bytes. Leave it, or lower it if the email or the portal asks for less.
Send it
The result shows the new size, so you can check it against the limit. We delete the upload as soon as the file is built.
Frequently asked questions about Compress PDF to 10 MB
Why would I need a PDF under 10 MB?
It is a common limit for email attachments at work and for upload portals at universities, publishers and online print services. Even when your own email allows more, a smaller file is more likely to arrive, because the receiving side may accept less than you can send.
Why does my email refuse a file that is under the limit?
Attachments are converted to text for sending, which makes them about a third larger on the way. A 9 MB PDF can count as about 12 MB, so a mail system with a 10 MB limit turns it down. If that happens, type a lower figure, such as 7000 KB, and compress again.
How many pages fit under 10 MB?
Most documents fit easily. Our thirty-page colour scan, 32.5 MB, came to 6.27 MB without its pictures dropping below 150 DPI. Our forty-five-page scan, 48.9 MB, came to 9.41 MB, close to the line but still at 150 DPI; the same scan sent to 5 MB had to drop to 72 DPI. The files that need this page are the big ones: scanned books, theses with many figures, and catalogues or brochures full of photos.
Can I send a PDF compressed to 10 MB to a print shop?
Ask the print shop first. Printers usually want pictures at full resolution, and compressing lowers them to screen quality, 150 dots per inch at most. That looks fine printed at home or in the office; for a printed brochure, send the original file.
The file is still over 10 MB. What can I do?
Then the file has a great many pages, or most of it is something that cannot shrink further. Split it with Split PDF and send the parts in separate emails, or remove pages you do not need with Organize PDF.
