The honest answer

Which one should you use?

Choose KovaPDF if…

  • You need to edit text or redact, and not every week. KovaPDF's PDF Editor and Redact PDF are free. On Foxit they are part of a $129.99 yearly plan.
  • You do not want a 12-month commitment. Foxit's monthly option is a yearly plan paid in monthly parts. KovaPDF is free, and Pro can be paid month to month.
  • You would rather not upload private files. 24 KovaPDF tools, including Merge, Split, Protect and OCR to text, run in your browser. Foxit's online tools process files on its servers.
  • You send documents for signature. Request Signatures is free with an account, adds a certificate of completion and seals the result with a trusted timestamp.
  • You write in Bangla or Hindi. Bijoy and Kruti Dev converters sit next to the PDF tools.

Choose Foxit if…

  • You want a full desktop editor on Windows or Mac. Foxit PDF Editor is a mature desktop program, and the free Foxit PDF Reader runs on both. KovaPDF's app is Windows only.
  • You use AI on your documents a lot. A Foxit account includes 300 AI credits a month for chat, translation, summaries and contract review. KovaPDF's AI summaries are limited.
  • You convert unusual formats. Foxit's free converter handles TIFF, RTF, BMP and GIF files as well as Office and images.
  • Your company needs volume licences and eSign with an API. Foxit sells volume licences and an eSign Business plan with unlimited envelopes and an API.

Why people look for a Foxit alternative

Foxit makes a well-known desktop editor and a free PDF Reader, and its online converters work without an account. The limits show up when you need more than a quick conversion. Editing the text, redaction, PDF/A and batch work belong to Foxit PDF Editor, which costs $129.99 a year. Foxit's compress page says unlimited use, stronger compression and batch tools need the Editor, but it does not say where the free limit is.

Foxit's monthly option is "Annual plan, billed monthly", so paying monthly still means a 12-month commitment. There is a 14-day trial with no card.

What you get on KovaPDF, free

  • Text editing. The PDF Editor changes the words themselves, and makes scanned pages editable too.
  • Redaction and archiving. Redact PDF removes text for good, and PDF to PDF/A makes long-term archive copies.
  • Strong compression. Compress PDF has three levels and can aim for an exact size, such as under 1 MB.
  • Free without an account. Every tool works without signing in, within a limited free allowance that refills over time. A free account raises it.
  • Many files at once. Batch tools take 10 files without an account and 50 with one.

Signing: a free tool or a real request

Foxit's free eSign tool needs no account, but Foxit itself says signatures made with it are not legally binding. Its binding eSign starts at $120 per user a year.

Request Signatures on KovaPDF is free with a free account, within a limited allowance. Every finished document gets a certificate of completion and is sealed with a trusted timestamp. These are simple electronic signatures, not qualified ones. To sign something yourself, Sign PDF needs no account.

Where your files go

Foxit's online tools upload files to Foxit's servers in the US, Germany, Canada, Australia or Japan. Uploads are deleted after processing, and finished files are typically deleted within a day.

On KovaPDF, 24 tools work entirely in your browser: Merge, Split, Protect, Unlock and reading text from scans with Image to Text among them. Tools that need our server delete your file as soon as the job is done.

Need a desktop program?

If you want an editor on your own computer, the free KovaPDF app for Windows comes from the Microsoft Store and 28 of its tools work offline. There is no Mac version, so on a Mac, Foxit's free Reader or the KovaPDF website are the options.
