The honest answer

Which one should you use?

Choose KovaPDF if…

  • You need more than one task a day. KovaPDF does not stop you after one task a day: its free allowance refills over time, and a free account raises it.
  • You do not want to give a card for a trial. Xodo's 3-day trials need a payment method and Xodo does not give refunds. KovaPDF needs no card to use every tool free.
  • You want a free Windows app that works offline. The KovaPDF app is free from the Microsoft Store, and 28 of its tools work without internet. Xodo's desktop editor is a paid product.
  • You send documents for signature. Request Signatures is free with a free account, within a limited allowance; Xodo Sign's free tier allows 3 documents a month.
  • You write in Bangla or Hindi. Bijoy and Kruti Dev converters sit next to the PDF tools.

Choose Xodo if…

  • You work on a Mac or Linux. Xodo PDF Studio runs offline on Windows, macOS and Linux. KovaPDF's desktop app is Windows only.
  • You want phone apps from the app stores. Xodo has iPhone and Android apps; KovaPDF on a phone is a web app you install from the browser.
  • You compare documents or open unusual files. Xodo compares two PDFs, converts DICOM medical images to PDF and has a Word document editor.
  • You want your files stored online. A free Xodo account comes with 1 GB of cloud storage. KovaPDF deletes your files when the job is done.

Why people look for a Xodo alternative

Xodo has a long list of tools. The free plan on its website, though, allows 1 action a day. Merge one file and the next tool shows a "Daily free use reached" notice until tomorrow.

The Xodo Web plan costs $7.99 a month, billed as $95.88 for the year, and the desktop editor, PDF Studio, is $119.88 a year. Xodo's trials last 3 days and ask for a payment method. They renew unless you cancel in time, and Xodo's pricing page says it does not offer refunds.

What you get on KovaPDF, free

  • Free without an account. Every tool works without signing in, within a limited free allowance that refills over time. A free account raises it.
  • Editing, OCR, redaction and PDF/A. The PDF Editor changes the text itself, OCR PDF makes scans searchable, Redact PDF removes text for good, and PDF to PDF/A makes archive copies.
  • Passwords. Protect PDF and Unlock PDF run in your browser. Xodo's web tools do not include them.
  • Signature requests. Request Signatures is free with a free account, within a limited allowance. Xodo Sign's free tier allows 3 documents a month.
  • Bangla and Hindi. Xodo's site is in Bangla and Hindi, but Bijoy and Kruti Dev converters are not in its tool list. KovaPDF has Bijoy to Unicode and Kruti Dev to Unicode.

Is Xodo private?

Xodo says most of its tools process files on your device, and that files which do need uploading are deleted after one hour. That is a good answer. KovaPDF is similar: 24 tools, including Merge, Split and PDF to JPG, work entirely in your browser, and tools that need our server delete your file as soon as the job is done, not an hour later.

Looking for a Xodo alternative on Windows or Android?

Most people searching for this want an app. On Windows, the free KovaPDF desktop app comes from the Microsoft Store, and 28 of its tools work offline, for a limited number of tasks each day without internet. Xodo's own desktop editor is paid.

On Android and iPhone, KovaPDF is a web app you install from the browser; it is not in the app stores yet. It includes a free document scanner. Xodo has store apps for both, but its free mobile plan adds a watermark to your files.
