What our test form held after download
We made a one-page volunteer sign-up form with four text boxes and two check boxes, filled it in on this page, downloaded it, and read its fields back with a separate PDF reader. Measured on October 21, 2026.

Because the answers go into the fields, not on top of them, the person you send it to sees a normal filled form in any PDF reader, and can still correct a box if needed.
When the form has no boxes to click
Some PDFs only look like forms: the lines and boxes are printed, not fillable. In that case click on the line and type with Add text, the same way you would write on paper. To turn such a file into a real form for other people to fill in, use PDF Forms, which finds the blank lines and boxes and makes them fields.
Before you send a filled form
A few things that catch people out:
- Check the dates are in the format the form asks for (MM/DD/YYYY in the US, DD/MM/YYYY in most other places).
- If the form will be printed and signed by hand, download first, then print. If it can be signed electronically, use Sign before you download.
- Keep a copy of the empty form, so you can start again if a box needs a different answer later.

How do I fill out a PDF form online for free?
Open the form on this page, click each box and type, then Review & download. Nothing needs installing, and your upload is deleted as soon as the filled form is ready.
Will the form still be fillable after I save it?
Yes. The answers are written into the form's own fields. In our test every field could still be changed in another PDF reader after download.
Can I fill in a PDF that has no fillable fields?
Yes. Choose Add text and click on the line where the answer goes. To make the file a proper fillable form, use PDF Forms.
Can I sign the form too?
Yes. Choose Sign to draw, type or upload your signature, and place it on the signature line before you download.
Why did my answers disappear after I saved in another app?
Some viewers keep typed answers only on screen and not in the file. Here the answers are saved into the fields. Our post on forms that won't save typed answers explains the usual causes.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. The editor opens on a phone browser, and tapping a box brings up the keyboard.
