Frequently asked questions about WebP to JPG
Why do pictures I save from websites end up as WebP?
Many websites send their pictures as WebP because it is smaller than JPG or PNG for the same look, so pages load faster. When you save a picture, your browser keeps the format the site sent, which is why "Save image as" gives you a .webp file.
Which apps cannot open WebP files?
Older versions of Photoshop, the old Windows Photo Viewer, some email programs and older phones, and many job, visa and school upload forms that list only JPG and PNG. A JPG opens in all of them.
Will the JPG look worse than the WebP?
At High (90) you will not see a difference on a normal screen. The JPG is larger, because WebP packs pictures more tightly: our 1280 × 853 test photo was 30 KB as a WebP, 81 KB as a JPG at High (90) and 39 KB at Small file (65). Choose Medium (80) or Small file (65) when the size matters more.
What happens to a transparent background?
A JPG cannot be see-through, so transparent parts are filled with white. Under Background you can choose black or any other colour instead. To keep the transparency, convert to PNG on the WebP to PNG page.
Can I convert an animated WebP?
Yes, but it becomes a still picture of the first frame, because a JPG cannot hold an animation. The page tells you when it happened.
Are my pictures uploaded?
No. The picture is converted by your browser, on your device, and is never sent to us. Only the fact that a task ran is counted. The one exception is an iPhone HEIC photo: if you add one to the same set, that set is sent to our server to be converted, and deleted as soon as it is done.
How many pictures can I convert at once?
Up to 10 at a time without an account, and 50 when you are signed in. They all get the same settings and download together in one ZIP. If one picture cannot be read, the others still finish and the page lists the one that did not.
