Everything JPG to PNG can do
Turn JPG photos into PNG files for editing, design tools and PNG-only uploads. Free, in your browser.
What changes
- Only the format: the PNG shows exactly what the JPG shows
- From here on, saving again loses nothing
- The file grows: our 102 KB test photo became 881 KB
What stays as it was
- The solid background; nothing is cut out or made see-through
- Width and height, unless you choose Make smaller
- Upright, without the location or camera details
How it works
JPG to PNG in three steps
Add your JPG files
One or several photos, scans or images.
PNG is already chosen
There is nothing else to set. Choose Make smaller only if you need fewer pixels.
Download your PNGs
Save the PNG, or one ZIP when you added several. Expect each PNG to be several times the size of its JPG.
Frequently asked questions about JPG to PNG
Will converting to PNG improve the quality?
No. The PNG holds exactly what the JPG shows, including any blur or blockiness the JPG already has. What it does give you is no further loss: a PNG can be edited and saved many times without getting worse, while a JPG loses a little each time it is saved.
Why is the PNG bigger than the JPG?
A PNG stores every pixel without loss, so a photo usually comes out several times larger than the JPG: our 102 KB test photo, 1280 × 853 pixels, became an 881 KB PNG. If you only need a smaller file, keep the JPG, or run the PNG through Compress Image.
Does this make the background transparent?
No. A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG has the same solid background as the photo. This page changes the format; it does not cut anything out.
Why would I need a PNG?
Some upload forms, print shops, app stores and design programs ask for PNG. It is also the better choice for screenshots and graphics with text, and for a picture you will edit and save more than once.
Will my phone photo come out the right way up?
Yes. Phones store which way up a photo was taken, and the PNG is turned to match. Where the photo was taken and the camera details are not copied into the PNG.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. Your browser turns the JPG into a PNG on this device, and nothing is sent to us.
