Frequently asked questions about HEIC to JPG
Why are my iPhone photos HEIC?
Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC by default, because it takes about half the space of a JPG at the same quality. To make new photos JPG, go to Settings, Camera, Formats and choose Most Compatible. Photos you already took stay HEIC, and this page converts them.
Why can't Windows open HEIC files?
Windows needs two add-ons from the Microsoft Store to show them, HEIF Image Extensions and HEVC Video Extensions, and the second one may cost a small fee. Without them the Photos app cannot open the file. Many upload forms, older Android phones and office programs refuse HEIC too. A JPG opens everywhere.
What happens to my file?
Most browsers cannot open HEIC, so a set that includes a HEIC photo is sent to our server over an encrypted connection, converted there, and deleted as soon as the JPGs are made. We keep a record that the tool was used, not the photo. JPG, PNG and WebP pictures added without a HEIC photo are converted in your browser and never sent.
Will the photo lose quality or come out sideways?
Quality 90 keeps photos looking the same as on your phone; choose Best (95) for the most detail. Each photo comes out the right way up, as your iPhone showed it.
Is the location taken out of the photo?
Yes. Where the photo was taken, the camera details and the other hidden information in the HEIC file are not copied into the JPG.
What about Live Photos and portrait photos?
The still photo is converted. The few seconds of video in a Live Photo are kept by your iPhone as a separate file, so they are not part of the HEIC, and the depth information of a portrait photo is left out.
How many photos can I convert at once?
Up to 10 at a time without an account, and 50 when you are signed in. They all get the same settings and download together in one ZIP. If one photo cannot be read, the others still finish and the page lists the one that did not.
